Advocacy and Legislation

National PTA has defined advocacy as the act of mobilizing individuals and local PTAs to work with Maryland PTA and National PTA to make changes and improvements in programs and policies that benefit children and youth.

We may be advocates for our own children by participating in parent-teacher conferences. However by joining the PTA you are indicating your commitment to advocating by adding your voice to the numbers of dedicated parents and teachers in a school PTA, council PTA, state PTA and National PTA.

At any given time, a PTA member may engage in a variety of activities that represent a range of efforts in support of children - their own individual child or a group of children or all children. We usually start by speaking for our own children and then recognize that the children in the classroom or the school or the entire county face similar challenges. We begin to advocate for everychild with onevoice.

For more than a hundred years, PTA has been working "to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth" (PTA Purpose)

Local PTAs must follow HCCPTA, Maryland PTA, and National PTA positions. Local PTAs may not work in opposition to those positions. Additionally, local PTAs may make their own decisions on an issue providing HCCPTA, Maryland PTA or National PTA has not taken a position on that issue and that the issue is aligned with the Purposes of PTA.
